The Wisconsin Population Health Service Fellowship

2017 - 2019 COHORT

Whitney received her law degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School, her Master of Public Health degree from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, and her bachelor’s degree in paralegal studies from Winona State University. Her professional interests include obesity prevention through nutrition and physical activity policy and implementation. During graduate school, Whitney interned at Public Health Madison & Dane County where she completed an immigrant and refugee health care access project, which highlighted the barriers immigrants and refugees face and offered policy recommendations to decrease those barriers. Whitney also interned at End Domestic Abuse WI where she answered legal technical questions and completed a report on Wisconsin’s Mandatory Abuse Reporting Law and proposed policy recommendations to decrease negative impacts on domestic abuse victims. Whitney will complete her fellowship at the Wisconsin Department of Health Services where she will implement both law and public health skills. Preceptor: Stephanie Schauer.

Niki received her MPH in Public Health Policy & Administration from UW-Milwaukee's Zilber School of Public Health and her BS from UW-Madison. She was born and raised in rural Wisconsin, which has fueled her passion for improving rural health issues in the state. As an MPH student, she focused her research and coursework on the rural opioid epidemic and worked for the WI Initiative for Stigma Elimination (WISE), a statewide coalition focused on eliminating the stigma surrounding mental health challenges. She completed her MPH fieldwork at Outagamie County Public Health where she helped them begin the path towards public health accreditation and was involved in various infrastructure pieces. Further, she partnered with the Children's Health Alliance of Wisconsin, advocating for value-based financing in Wisconsin's Medicaid system. Niki will be placed with the Wood County Health Department in Central WI where she will focus on her rural health passions regarding substance abuse, mental health, and health in all policies. Morgan Krhin received her MPH in Health Behavior Health Promotion from the University of Arizona Mel and Enid College of Public Health and her Bachelor's degree in Spanish with a concentration in Biology from Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin. Her professional and research interests include increasing access to health care resources specifically among Latino and immigrant communities, Community Health Worker workforce development, and addressing environmental and occupational health injustices. Prior to graduate school, Morgan worked as a Mobile Clinic Outreach Coordinator for Family Health La Clinica in Wautoma, Wisconsin where she worked collaboratively to provide free health services to migrant workers across the state of Wisconsin. Additionally, Morgan participated in a longitudinal research project at Wake Forest School of Medicine in Wiston-Salem, North Carolina assessing the impact of Organophosphate pesticide exposure on cognitive development among Latino migrant farmworkers. Morgan will complete her fellowship in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where she will be placed with United Voices working to strengthen community workforces and increase health care accessibility at the city and state level and also with the Milwaukee Health Department supporting infectious disease epidemiology efforts. Maggie received her Master of Public Health and Public Affairs degrees and Bachelor's degrees in Political Science, International Studies and Global Health from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. As part of her Master's capstone project, she worked with Wisconsin AHEC to evaluate and advance the Community Health Worker model in the state. Professional and academic interests include policy, socioeconomic determinants and political economy of health, health inequities, immigrant health. Maggie has prior experience working with orphaned Roma children in Bulgaria and volunteering in various settings, from the foothills of the Himalayas to the United Nations. Most recently, Maggie worked at the state Bureau of Communicable Diseases where she collaborated with the Tuberculosis and Refugee Health teams to improve processes and build capacity for refugee and immigrant care, connecting underserved populations across Wisconsin to critical health services. Maggie will complete her fellowship at the Office of Policy and Practice Alignment, Wisconsin Division of Public Health. Preceptor: Mimi Johnson

Cory received his Master of Public Health in Epidemiology from the Zilber School of Public Health at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. He is passionate about providing evidence that promotes health in all policies, health equity, and population well-being. Prior to graduate school, Cory served as a Rostro de Cristo volunteer where he supported community-led initiatives on the outskirts of Ecuador’s largest city. As a graduate student, Cory worked on several research projects including a longitudinal data analysis of opioid prescribing practices of dentists, a case-control study on breast cancer incidence among young women, and a report on health disparities by socio-economic status in Milwaukee County. Cory is excited to complete his fellowship with the Wisconsin Division of Public Health where he will support the Office of Health Informatics. Preceptor: Milda Aksamitauskas
