The Wisconsin Population Health Service Fellowship

Jameela received her MPH degree from the Indiana University of Fairbanks School of Public Health in 2010/ She then went onto complete the yearlong Graduated Health Administration Training Program with the Veterans Health Administration in 2011. Following this experience, Jameela served as a freelance technical advisor for various nonprofits, both locally and globally for three years. She completed her second year of the Fellowship with the Wisconsin Center for Public Health Education and Training, focusing on strengthening the public health system by improving public health workforce capacity in Wisconsin. Her first year of the Fellowship was completed at the University of Wisconsin-Madison Global Health institute, focusing on quality improvement initiatives. Preceptor: Barbara Duerst and Evelyn Cruz

Post Fellowship: Jameela is currently exploring other lands and opportunities to improve the lives of girls and women in low-resource settings.

Karina earned her MD at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Karina’s interests in community health and underserved populations fueled her engagement in many outreach projects during medical school, and ultimately inspired her commitment to primary care. She completed her Family Medicine Residency at the University of Wisconsin – Madison in June 2014, with her primary care clinical training based out of the Wingra Family Medicine Center. She also spent five weeks in Haiti working on public health projects as part of her Global Health Pathway focus. Karina decided to pursue additional public and population health training through the University of Wisconsin – Madison Preventative Medicine Residency with the aim of impacting health disparities and primary care systems on a broader scale. She completed her MPH during the program and gained valuable experience working on projects in both state and local public health departments. Preceptor: Parvathy Pillai and Timothy Corden

Post-Fellowship: Karina remains engaged at the Wingra Clinic with population health and health systems improvement works.

Stephanie received her MPH degree from the University of Wisconsin- Madison School of Medicine and Public Health. Stephanie was placed in Madison at the Wisconsin Division of Public Health and at Public Health Madison & Dane County. During her Fellowship, she primarily worked on projects focused on the social determinants of health, infant mortality,a nd sexual and reproductive health. Stephanie led a comprehensive county-wide assessment of sexual and reproductive health in Dance County, including an as assessment of the rates of STIs, HIV/AIDS, teen births, sexual violence, and unintended births. She also co-managed a statewide maternal and child health initiative to improve equity in birth outcomes for African American families in Wisconsin and conducted a participatory program evaluation of a nurse home visiting program serving expecting mothers. She collaborated with community-based partners to build statewide capacity for criminal justice system reform and to raise awareness and uptake of tax credits available to low-income families.  Preceptors: Patrice Onheiber and Mary Michaud

Post Fellowship: Stephanie is serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Peru. She is a Public Health Educator on maternal and child health and sexual and reproductive health.

Bailey holds a Masters degree in Public Health from the UW-Milwaukee Joseph J. Zilber School of Public Health. She is a graduate of the Graduate Education Diversity Internship (GEDI) of the American Evaluation Association, an internship focused on intensive training in culturally responsive evaluation and a graduate of the City Leaders Program at CityMatCH, a training program focused on urban maternal and child health. A strong advocate for life-long service leadership and civic engagement, she is a mentor for the AmeriCorps City Year Program and serves on the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh LGBTQA+ Alumni Executive Board. Bailey completed her Fellowship with United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County, where she was took leadership in designing and facilitating an environmental scan for the Milwaukee Lifecourse Initiative for Healthy Families (LIHF). As the Health Portfolio Manager at United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County where she managed United Way's largest investment of 66 programs that addressed maternal health and infant health, teen pregnancy, violence prevention, behavioral and mental health, disabilities, and health care access. She coordinated strategies to identify service gaps for community partners and helped to implement equity-based funding opportunities. She also partnered with Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) to evaluate the fidelity of MPS’ Human Grown and Development Curriculum implementation. Bailey also served as Chair of the Steering Committee for Milwaukee’s 6th Annual Project Homeless Connect. Preceptors: Nicole Angresano

Post Fellowship: Bailey currently serves as the Health Portfolio Manager at United Way of Greater Milwaukee & Waukesha County

Evelyn received her MPH and MSW from the George Warren Brown School of Social Work at Washington University in St. Louis. Prior to graduate school, she spent two years as a Teach for America Baltimore corps member teaching high school science. During her graduate program Evelyn worked for a cancer epidemiologist on a rare disease registry, analyzed rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) as a practicum student at a local health department, and collaborated with a local coalition to evaluate a drug use prevention program for teens. Evelyn completed her Fellowship with the Division of Disease Control and Environmental Health at the City of Milwaukee Health Department and the Community Health Improvement for Milwaukee's Children (CHIMC) project at the Medical College of Wisconsin. At the health department, she contributed to preparedness and response for Ebola virus disease and other emerging infections and managed a local immunization coalition's campaign to promote the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine. Evelyn gained further data management and analysis skills with the CHIMC project, a community-based participatory research study that aims to reduce disparities in immunization rates among Milwaukee's children. She also contributed to the implementation and analysis of a survey of childcare agencies to assess their immunization policies and practices. Preceptors: Marisa Stanley & Ernestine Willis

Post Fellowship: Evelyn is currently working at the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene as a Global Migration Epidemiologist. In this role, she focuses on projects that explore the impact of global migration and travel on the spread of infectious diseases in Maryland.

Hester completed her MPH in Community Health Promotion at the University of Minnesota. During graduate school, Hester worked as an evaluation consultant on an Eliminating Health Disparities Initiative grant at a community center in Minneapolis. She also volunteered as a Spanish interpreter at a free student-run clinic. For her master’s project, she conducted a research project with the Minnesota Department of Health to assess the barriers to HIV testing among the African-born and Latino populations in Minnesota. During her Fellowship, Hester was placed with both the Minority Health Program at the Wisconsin Division of Public Health and with Centro Hispano of Dane County in Madison. At Centro Hispano, Hester evaluated Centro’s youth programming and various projects targeting the social determinants of health for the Latino community in Dane County. With the Minority Health Program, she worked on projects and policies focused on health equity. Her primary project was to manage the Health Equity Check-In, a series of community-led focus groups conducted throughout Wisconsin to gather community health priorities and evaluate the results of the Healthiest Wisconsin 2020 Baseline and Health Disparities Report. She also coordinated the first year of implementation of the Wisconsin Minority Health HIV Partnership Initiative, a five-year project funded by the federal Office of Minority Health to address HIV disparities in Milwaukee. Preceptors: Evelyn Cruz & Karen Menendez-Coller

Post Fellowship: Following the Fellowship, Hester continues this work in her new role as the HIV Minority Health Partnership Grant Coordinator with the Wisconsin AIDS/HIV Program and the UW Madison Department of Medicine.
